Services for the Elderly

Ride On Reduced Fares
 
WHAT: Services for the elderly, people with disabilities and Medicaid card holders. 
 
WHEN: 5:30 am - midnight, 7 days a week, on all regular bus routes 
 
WHO: Seniors, people on Medicare, and people with disabilities. 
 
HOW: Show an ID:
Seniors can get an ID at their library or at transit information centers. A Medicare ID can be used on its own, no other ID needed. People with disabilities get their ID's from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro), see the MetroAccess program for further information. 
 
COST: $.50 at all times, compared to the regular fare of $1.10.

ACCESSIBLE Ride On
 
WHAT: Ride On ensures that a lift-equipped bus is on a regular route when a request is made by a person who uses a wheelchair or other type of mobility aid. In order to insure that a lift-equipped bus is available when needed, please call for ahead of time. Requests are filled on a first come, first served basis. 
 
WHEN: 5:30 am - midnight, 7 days a week, on all regular bus routes. 
 
WHO: people who use wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility aids. 
 
HOW: Call the day before you are traveling, by 3:00pm at the latest. For Sunday Service, call by 3:00 pm on the Friday before your service is needed. Give RideOn the following information: the time you are traveling, and the stops (must be a regular route and stop) you will be traveling from and going to. You will need a proper ID from Metro. 
 
COST: $.50 at all times

WHAT: A taxi subsidy program funded by Montgomery County. There are no restrictions on the type of trip. 
 
WHO: Low-income people with disabilities Seniors age 70 and over 
 
HOW: You can purchase one $35.00 coupon book each month. There are 35 $1.00 coupons in each book. You pay taxi drivers with the coupons, and can combine them with cash. There are no restrictions on the use of the coupons; they can be used for a medical appointment or a visit with a friend. 
 
COST: Cost of coupon book is based on income. 
 
EXAMPLE: If your income is between $14,001 to $17,000, you will pay $17.50 for a $35.00 book of coupons. 
Maximum annual income for eligibility is $20,000 for a single person and $25,000 for a couple.

TAXI SERVICE  Most Montgomery County taxi companies have vehicles dedicated to accommodate customers with physical disabilities. Confirm availability by calling in advance of you transportation need - one day ahead is recommended, although it is not required by any of the companies. Only Barwood has a separate division of wheelchair-accessible vans, called Taxi Plus. If the taxi company offers you a confirmation number, make note of it. It can help you if you have to call back for any reason. 
 
WHAT:  Taxi Service - Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles 
 
WHEN: 24 Hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
 
WHO: Anyone 
 
HOW: Call and request a wheelchair-accessible vehicle if needed.
 
COST: It costs the same as regular taxi service in a sedan. 
  • $1.80 for pick-up (first 1/6 mile)
  • $.25 for each succeeding 1/6 mile up to 15 miles
  • $.20 each 1/6 thereafter


Note: Fares are set by Montgomery County, which regulates the taxi industry.
